AATFs and downstream evidence, explained
What an AATF is, what evidence notes prove, and why checking downstream matters for real traceability.
“Taken away” isn’t compliance. To meet WEEE duties you need to know your material reached a legitimate treatment endpoint — which is what AATFs and downstream evidence are about.
What an AATF is
An Approved Authorised Treatment Facility is a permitted site licensed to treat WEEE. Treatment at an AATF is what allows WEEE evidence notes to be issued for the tonnage recovered.
What evidence notes prove
A WEEE evidence note confirms the quantity and category of electrical waste that was actually treated — the paper trail behind your recycling claims and reporting.
Why downstream checks matter
Duty of care doesn’t stop at the first handover. Checking the downstream route — where material goes after you — is how you avoid your waste ending up somewhere illegitimate. Linking downstream evidence to the originating collection makes this traceable.
